Virtual Fencing: A Climate Adaptation StrategyJuly 22, 2026Virtual fencing, a relatively new technology, allows ranchers to control livestock distribution in rangeland landscapes without physical fences. Livestock wear collars that communicate with GPS and reception towers to form a virtual fence set by the rancher or land manager. When the livestock reach the limit of the virtual fence, auditory stimuli (a series of loud beeps) emit from the collar. If livestock continue their direction of travel beyond the boundaries of the virtual fence, they receive a benign shock. Cattle have demonstrated the ability and tendency to rapidly learn the virtual fencing cues, eventually responding to the audio cue alone. Several studies have documented success with sheep and goats as well.Read article ↗UW-Led Article Highlights Virtual Fencing’s Potential to Transform Conservation on Working RangelandsMay 7, 2026A new perspective article in the journal Biological Conservation argues that virtual livestock fencing could reshape how ranchers and conservationists manage working lands.Read article ↗How virtual fencing connects conservation and ranchingApril 2, 2026RIVERTON — On rolling plains across Wyoming, private lands and ranches that once had large wooden fences breaking through the landscape are slowly returning to their more open past. Grazing cattle slow to a stop at an invisible barrier and are redirected through audible cues coming from collars around their necks.Read article ↗Managing Yearling Heifers with Virtual Fence on Mountain Riparian PasturesApril 1, 2026Virtual fencing offers a promising approach for improving grazing management in sensitive riparian pasture systems. In a two year study conducted in the Bridger Mountains of Montana, MSU researchers evaluated rotational and season long grazing strategies using virtual fence technology on yearling heifers. Preliminary results from the first year indicate that virtual fencing effectively managed cattle distribution, with grazing strategy influencing both forage quality and animal performance. Ongoing analysis will further clarify how virtual fencing can support efficient and flexible livestock management.Read article ↗Ranchers test virtual fence technology's ability to keep cows safe from grizzly bearsDecember 26, 2025Technology enabling virtual fences for pets is now being adapted for livestock.
