Wildlife & Conservation

Currently, the Clement Targhee Creek property includes a 500-acre state lease that is very rugged and includes abundant forage, many natural springs and creeks, including Targhee Creek and Howard Creek, both important spawning sites for Yellowstone cutthroat trout in Henry's Lake.

Social

The Buffalo River property seeks to minimize livestock access to neighboring subdivisions.

Goals

Crapo's and Idaho Fish and Game are interested in protecting the creek beds to improve trout habitat on the Targhee Creek property. Additionally, successful implementation of virtual fence on this property would halt construction of approximately 6 miles of fence. The Buffalo River property seeks to minimize livestock impacts on the Buffalo River, Tom's Creek, and neighboring subdivisions. The property is very wet and virtual fencing will allow for adaptive livestock grazing that supports forage quality and may result in a few miles of interior fence removal.

Ranch

Weston Crapo, Crapo Cattle Enterprises, LLC, operates out of Eastern Idaho with about 500 head of cattle enrolled in the Virtual Fence Conservation Partnership.

A large team of partners visited the site for Crapo Cattle Enterprises’ virtual fence project on April 29, 2026. This site visit was conducted to support the development of a conservation monitoring plan for Weston Crapo, who aims to use virtual fence to implement a rotational grazing plan. Several partners were invited to join including the landowner, RCF, PERC, GYC, and Halter. Throughout the morning, we discussed several possible options for accomplishing conservation and operational goals through the use of virtual fence (VF). Crapo plans to implement a grazing rotation for improved forage utilization while limiting livestock access to select riparian areas and neighboring subdivisions along the Buffalo River. In the long term, Crapo would like to see VF allow for the removal of old rotted and rusted fence.

RCF along with three ID Fish and Game personnel visited with Weston Crapo to discuss his virtual fence project and grazing management. Weston has implemented a strip grazing rotation on the Buffalo property and is working with IDFG to create strategic water gaps at riparian areas that may be less sensitive to cattle activity. Additionally, they are planning on bringing in rock to armor some more at-risk banks where cattle are decreasing bank stability and increasing sedimentation along Targhee and Tom Creeks. Lastly, Weston is hoping that virtual fence will allow him to remove cross fencing that is constantly damaged and rotting from high water.
